Welcome! May is here, spring has sprung, and it’s prom season. Check out ParentUp for tips on recognizing substance use in teens, talking to your kids and teens about underage drinking and other drug use, and preparing them for safe, fun, substance free parties and events.
Thanks to everyone who participated in “Be the Change for A Healthier St. Albans Dinner and Dialogue Night 2012 on April 19. Special thanks to St. Albans Neighborhood Watch, St. Albans City Council and Mayor Liz Gamache, St. Albans City School VKAT, and BFA UHS for the use of the cafeteria.
Coming up later this month in Swanton, we’re co-sponsoring another Dinner and Dialogue Night with the MVU VTLSP students and their adviser, Mr. Bob Corey. The MVU dinner and dialogue night takes place Tuesday, May 29, 6 p.m. in the MVU cafeteria. Hope to see you there!
A big thank you to the Enosburg Falls High School YRBS student team for their Sticker Shock campaign in Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union. Customers at stores that sell alcohol in Enosburg, Berkshire, and Bakersfield are being reminded that the legal drinking age is 21 and that it is illegal and unsafe to supply alcohol to minors. Thanks, Bella, Tonia, Izzy, Sprague, Jeanessa, Chantal, and Mitchell, and adviser Sandra Brauer, for your dedication to preventing underage and binge alcohol use!
Meanwhile, VKAT students at St. Albans City and St. Albans Town schools are surveying local stores that advertise alcohol and tobacco products with an eye to reducing retail advertising. More coming on that exciting project, part of our region’s Healthy Retailers initiative.
Parents, “Safe Homes Parent Network” is a way for you to connect, support one another, and keep kids safe and substance free across Franklin County. We’re inviting parents to “sign on” to the following:
- I will actively supervise all gatherings of youth in our home or on our property, or ask another responsible adult for help to do so.
- I will not allow the possession of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs by youth in our home or on our property.
- I will set expectations for my children by knowing where they are going, whom they are with, what they are doing, and when they are to return home.

Caring Communities also coordinates Franklin County’s Stop Teen Alcohol Risk Team (START) with our law enforcement partners, Court Diversion, the State’s Attorney, and the Vermont Department of Liquor Control. Why START? The purpose of this partnership is to reduce underage access to alcohol by enforcing laws regarding social hosting, enabling, and furnishing alcohol to minors. Click here for more on START.
